Ernest Dumble son of Thomas and Sarah Ann.
Born 1886.
Married 1911 to Clara Wilcock : Westleigh, St. Peter.

{We will remember you}

I think his brother Leonard may also have been a soldier in the first world war but I have to get the papers off ancestry printed off from Ancestry.co from the library. They look in poor condition.

When a birth, death or marriage was registered two copies were made one was kept by the local office (in this case the Lancashire BMD) the other was sent to the national office (Free BMD), as mistakes are made in the indexing we can look to the other to fill in the gaps.

Free BMD
Mar 1861 Thomas Dumble Wigan Robert/Isabella
Dec 1894 Mary Ellen Dumble Sunderland Robert/Annie
Dec 1896 William Dumble Sunderland Robert/Annie

What about the other names?
Without sending off for the certificates, or finding baptisms in the parish records we can only guess at their parents. And we need to check the death registers to see if they died.

Requests.

I am not the most accurate of people, so if you see an error or would like to check my research please feel free to let me know. In particular I am know for my poor mathematical powers !!!

If you can help with extra information please share - I will acknowledge your work. I also love social history so if you can provide background information in this case especially on the glass industry. I would be interested in what it was like to work in a glassworks, what the different types of glass were, the rise and fall of glassworks. Location of glassworks. What was Newcastle like 1800-1850.

However I must also admit to being quite slow at times in posting things to my blog.
Apologies.

Leaving Newcastle.

One of my interests is thinking why people moved. One of the main reasons, it seems is for work. I found this extract which might explain why the Dumbles left Newcastle.

Davidson Glass A history by Chris and Val Stewart
Hardys Publishing Ltd.

"In 1772 there were no fewer than 16 large glass works along the Tyne one making plate glass 3 making crown glass, 5 for broad or common window glass 2 for white or flint glass and 5 bottle houses. The glass from Newcastle was exported all over the world. In 1777 a tax was placed on the sale of glass because it had become an economically important industry.

By 1828 the local glass trade had reached its maximum proportions 40% of all glass made in the UK was made in Newcastle and the duty paid on the glass was in excess of £180,000 a year. Then the glass trade began to decline. In 1845 the import duty on glass was removed. This led to an increase in imported glass, particularly high quality German window glass and cheap bottles, tumblers and cans. Glass houses began to close as they were unable to compete on price with cheaper imports. Foreign competition was to become one of the most important factors in the eventual disappearance of the glass industry from the North East."
